Lebolution 2019 Recap

Between July 21st and August 1st, 2019, Lebanon saw yet another wave of WLCU Youth (WLCUY) tour the country for the third version of LEBolution, the WLCUY’s World Conference! Put together by the WLCUY Board and the WLCU World Secretary General, LEBolution 2019 brought together 191 participants from 17 different countries, ready to explore and discover the beauty of the homeland, connect with the land of their ancestors, and participate in a series of cultural and social activities across the country.

Day 1

Although participants started arriving a few days early, LEBolution officially started on Sunday, July 21st. The morning was dedicated to room assignments and registering the participants, as well as providing them with their Welcome Kit which included the traditional LEBolution t-shirt! Around noon, a mouth-watering lunch was served at the hotel, Notre Dame du Mont, and by 3:00pm the Opening Ceremony was underway!

After words from WLCU World Secretary General, Mr. Roger Hani, WLCU Vice President for Africa, Mr. Najib Khoury, an WLCUY President, Mr. Sergio de los Ríos Feghali, the group headed out for its first visit and activities in beautiful Ghazir. LEBolutioners were welcomed by Municipality President Mr. Charles Haddad and proceeded to take a walking tour around the town, with the last stop being Ghazir’s public gardens where they had a dabke workshop led by Mr. Juan Saba, director of Dabke Ballet Firqat al Arz, and had a traditional village dinner that included saj, manakish and local wines.

Day 2

The first full day was dedicated to the south, starting the day off with a visit to Saida. Lebolutioners arrived to Khan el Franj where they were welcomed by members of the Hariri Foundation and the Outreach Leadership Academy before visiting the famous Soap Museum, Debbaneh Palace, Hammam el Jedid and the iconic Saida Sea Castle.

After lunch, participants finished their visit to Saida by meeting with MP Bahia Hariri at Khan el Franj and continued their day further south to Tyre. In Tyre, the Roman ruins were the first stop, followed by a visit to the city’s port and a walking tour. A gorgeous sunset closed off the day at Al Fanar restaurant where the group enjoyed a memorable dinner party!

Day 3

Bcharre and Ehden await! Starting off early morning, the group began the day at the Gibran Khalil Gibran museum prior to participating in the cedar reforestation initiative of Comité de Sauvegarde pour l’Environnement de Becharré (CSEB) that aims to connect the cedar reserve in Bcharre with the one in Tannourine. In Dimane, as part of the initiative, participants planted cedars in name of the youth of the Lebanese diaspora!

The day continued with a visit to the Cedars of God reserve and a traditional Lebanese lunch offered by the Municipality of Bcharre at Cedar’s Heaven restaurant. After lunch the group headed off to Saydet el Hosn church to catch one of the most spectacular sunsets in Lebanon, and then did a short walking tour of the town before finishing the day with a high-energy dinner offered by former WLCU World President, Mr. Michel Doueihy.

Day 4

The first stop of the day was inside the mountain…quite literally. Jeita Grotto was the first visit of the day and, needless to say, Lebolutioners fell in love with it.

The group then headed off to the capital for an important visit at Banque du Liban with Governor Riad Saleme, who impressed participants with an overview of the Lebanese economy and the importance of the Central Bank. But this was not the only grand visit of the day: the group then was hosted at the Grand Serail by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Lebanon, Sheikh Saad Hariri, who did not hesitate to highlight the positive role of women, the youth and the diaspora in Lebanon’s future.

 

After lunch at Karamna restaurant in Downtown Beirut, the group toured Beirut in the City Sightseeing buses and enjoyed some free time around Downtown before the must-do visit to Raouche.

Day 5

Off to the Beqaa! The day began by visiting the imposing Baalbek ruins under the bright Beqaa sun and continued in beautiful Zahle for a homemade lunch hosted by Archbishop John Issam Darwish, Archbishop of the Melkite Greek Catholic Archeparchy of Zahle and Forzol. Participants then had tasty ice cream as dessert at Khalaf & Abou Slemian and enjoyed an afternoon stroll next to the Berdawni. A visit to the Armenian community in Aanjar was the last activity of the day, as Lebolutioners headed off to the historic ruins of the city and a memorable dinner party at Nabaa Anjar!

Day 6

The half-way point of the trip was marked by cultural activities at the Lebanese American University (LAU) Byblos Campus, starting the day off with CELIBAL’s (Latin American Centre for Lebanese Studies) VI International Symposium “Contemporary Lebanon: Challenges and Opportunities”. Lebolutioners witnessed a panel composed of Michael Young (Carnegie Middle East Centre), Joseph Bahout (Carnegie Middle East Centre), Nizar Hassan (The Lebanese Politics Podcast), Habib Malek (LAU) and Sergio Jalil (CELIBAL) express their opinion on a series of matters central to the country’s current state before opening the floor to a Q&A session. The symposium was followed by a talk from LAU presenting the various opportunities offered to international students, including the SINARC intensive Arabic program and the new cultural immersion summer program.

 

After lunch offered by the university, the WLCU Youth Congress took place. The WLCUY Board presented the work being done over the current term, including the formation of new Youth chapters around the world, active campaigns that have seen the participation of over 150 members of the WLCU Youth, the opening of an online courses alongside CELIBAL, and collaboration agreements established until present date. The 191 participants were then divided into groups, shared their experiences in the communities in their countries of residence, and discussed the future of Lebanon and how the youth, as an international Lebanese community, can have a positive impact.

After LAU, the group headed off to millenary Byblos, touring the castle, the old souks and the port before enjoying a dinner in the souks.

Day 7

Saturday was dedicated to Tripoli and El Mina, traditional and special Lebolution visits! The group was welcomed in the north at the Tripoli and North Lebanon Chamber of Commerce, enjoying delicious tripolitan breakfast, sweet knefeh and freshly made ice cream! After some early morning dabke, Lebolutioners went to the municipality of El Mina,where they were welcomed by the municipality, and carried out the most awaited event of the program: the Lebolution wall! A white wall close to the El Mina municipality was made available for Lebolutioners to leave their mark, resulting in a colourful painting to symbolize unity between Lebanon and its people, both residents and emigrants.

Participants then went back to Tripoli and toured the city and old souks, finishing the walking tour at the Citadel of Raymond de Saint-Gilles, or Tripoli Castle. A mouth-watering lunch was hosted by Mr. George Chabtini at Dar el Amar restaurant and participants enjoyed dessert at none other than famous Hallab! The group then headed off to San Charbel monastery in Annaya for a sunset visit before heading to Aamchit for a wonderful dinner at Pearl Island restaurant hosted by the DiasporaID team.

Day 8

A very special visit took place in the morning with the Lebolution group heading to Aamchit to the Lebanese Army’s Marine Commandos Regiment. After an introduction to the Army’s structure and activities and a meeting with the children of the martyrs of the LAF, Lebolutioners participated in various physical activities organized by the Army, including an obstacle course, a zip-line, rappelling and a boat ride! The afternoon was dedicated to relaxing, as the group headed to Aquamarina 1 for lunch and an afternoon at the beach!

Day 9

Day 9 was all about the mountain, starting the day off with a walking tour in lovely Dhour Shweir. After a reception at the municipality, participants walked among the town’s nature and visited a series of local landmarks and finished their visit with a delicious brunch next to iconic Hotel Azur. The day continued with a visit to Mar Sannine Historical Convent, where Lebolutioners were welcomed by the Baskinta scout team and a performance by Orchestra Lebam. The nuns at the convent provided homemade sweets and drinks for a special afternoon. Participants then headed off to Bakish for dinner with a jaw-dropping view of the mountain. Late at night participants went to Faqra for the Faqra festival to close off a wonderful day!

Day 10

The final full day was for the South, visiting historic Beaufort Castle in Arnoun. Participants then went to Marjeyoun

where they were welcomed by mayor Mr. Amal Hourany and enjoyed some snacks at the municipality building. After some rest, the group went to Hasbaya for a memorable lunch at Hasbani restaurant before heading further south to visit “traditional” Lebanon: Rashaya al Foukhar! In Rashaya al Foukhar participants were received with great news: a cedar had been planted to honour the Lebanese Army in name of the WLCU Youth! After a walking tour of the town that included visits to some of the famous pottery workshops, Lebolutioners enjoyed tasty manakish and local delicacies offered by the municipality.

Day 11

The final day started out in the Chouf region visiting beautiful Beiteddine Palace – received with a great zaffeh group – and Deir el Qamar. After a tour of the municipality and the town, the group enjoyed a relaxing lunch close to the Barouk cedars reserve. On the way back to the hotel, the group stopped for a must-do peaceful visit to Harissa to enjoy the view of Lebanon from above!

The program came to an end that night with a closing ceremony at Kasser el Snaubar restaurant in Aafs. The closing ceremony was a moment to thank all the sponsors, participants, and everyone who made this program a reality! But before finishing Lebolution, another traditional activity had to take place: the cultural exchange! Participants from each of the countries represented in the program organized a series of presentations and activities to share the traditions and typical sweets from each of their countries of residence before enjoying a delicious meal and dancing to celebrate the success of another great trip!

ESPAÑOL

Entre el 21 de julio y el 1 de agosto de 2019, Líbano vio otra ola de WLCU Youth (WLCUY) recorrer el país para la tercera versión de LEBolution, ¡la Conferencia Mundial de WLCUY! Organizado por la Junta de WLCUY y el Secretario General Mundial de WLCU, LEBolution 2019 reunió a 191 participantes de 17 países diferentes, listos para explorar y descubrir la belleza de la patria, conectarse con la tierra de sus antepasados ​​y participar en una serie de actividades culturales. y actividades sociales en todo el país.

 

Día 1

Aunque los participantes comenzaron a llegar unos días antes, LEBolution comenzó oficialmente el domingo 21 de julio. La mañana fue dedicada a la asignación de habitaciones y al registro de los participantes, así como a proporcionarles su kit de bienvenida que incluía la tradicional camiseta LEBolution.

Alrededor del mediodía, se sirvió un delicioso almuerzo en el hotel, Notre Dame du Mont, y a las 3:00 pm la Ceremonia de Apertura estaba en marcha. Después de las palabras del Secretario General Mundial de la WLCU, el Sr. Roger Hani, el Vicepresidente de la WLCU para África, el Sr. Najib Khoury, y el Presidente de la WLCUY, el Sr. Sergio de los Ríos Feghali, el grupo se dirigió a su primera visita y actividades en el hermoso Ghazir. El presidente de la municipalidad, el Sr. Charles Haddad, dio la bienvenida a LEBolutioners y procedió a hacer un recorrido a pie por la ciudad.

La última parada fueron los jardines públicos de Ghazir, donde tuvieron un taller de dabke dirigido por el Sr. Juan Saba, director del Ballet Dabke Firqat al Arz, y tenía una cena tradicional de pueblo que incluía saj, manakish y vinos locales.

Dia 2

El primer día completo se dedicó al sur, comenzando el día con una visita a Saida. Los lebolutioners llegaron a Khan el Franj donde fueron recibidos por miembros de la Fundación Hariri y la Academia de Liderazgo Outreach antes de visitar el famoso Museo del Jabón, el Palacio Debbaneh, Hammam el Jedid y el icónico Castillo del Mar de Saida.

Después del almuerzo, los participantes finalizaron su visita a Saida al reunirse con la diputada Bahia Hariri en Khan el Franj y continuaron su día más al sur, hacia Tiro. En Tiro, las ruinas romanas fueron la primera parada, seguida de una visita al puerto de la ciudad y un recorrido a pie. ¡Una hermosa puesta de sol cerró el día en el restaurante Al Fanar, donde el grupo disfrutó de una cena inolvidable!

Día 3

¡Bcharre y Ehden esperan! Comenzando temprano en la mañana, el grupo comenzó el día en el museo Gibran Khalil Gibran antes de participar en la iniciativa de reforestación de cedro del Comité de Sauvegarde pour l’Environnement de Becharré (CSEB) que tiene como objetivo conectar la reserva de cedro en Bcharre con la de Tannourine ¡En Dimane, como parte de la iniciativa, los participantes plantaron cedros en nombre de los jóvenes de la diáspora libanesa!

El día continuó con una visita a la reserva de los Cedros de Dios y un almuerzo tradicional libanés ofrecido por la Municipalidad de Bcharre en el restaurante Cedar’s Heaven. Después del almuerzo, el grupo se dirigió a la iglesia de Saydet el Hosn para ver una de las puestas de sol más espectaculares del Líbano, y luego realizó un breve recorrido a pie por la ciudad antes de terminar el día con una cena de alta energía ofrecida por el ex presidente mundial de la WLCU, Sr. Michel Doueihy.

Día 4

La primera parada del día fue dentro de la montaña … literalmente. Jeita Grotto fue la primera visita del día y, no hace falta decir que los Lebolutioners se enamoraron de ella.

Luego, el grupo se dirigió a la capital para una importante visita en el Banco del Líbano con el gobernador Riad Saleme, quien impresionó a los participantes con una visión general de la economía libanesa y la importancia del Banco Central.

Pero esta no fue la única gran visita del día: el primer ministro de la República del Líbano, PM Saad Hariri, que acogió al grupo en el Gran Serail, no dudó en destacar el papel positivo de las mujeres, los jóvenes y la diáspora en el futuro del Líbano.

Después del almuerzo en el restaurante Karamna en el centro de Beirut, el grupo recorrió Beirut en los autobuses de City Sightseeing y disfrutó de un poco de tiempo libre en el centro antes de la visita infaltable a Raouche.

Dia 5

¡A la Beqaa! El día comenzó visitando las imponentes ruinas de Baalbek bajo el brillante sol de Beqaa y continuó en la hermosa Zahle para un almuerzo casero organizado por el Arzobispo John Issam Darwish, Arzobispo de la Arqueparquía greco-católica melquita de Zahle y Forzol.

Luego, los participantes tomaron un sabroso helado como postre en Khalaf & Abou Slemian y disfrutaron de un paseo por la tarde junto al Berdawni. ¡Una visita a la comunidad armenia en Aanjar fue la última actividad del día, mientras los Lebolutioners se dirigían a las ruinas históricas de la ciudad y a una cena memorable en Nabaa Anjar!

Día 6

El punto medio del viaje estuvo marcado por actividades culturales en el campus de Byblos de la Universidad Americana Libanesa (LAU), comenzando el día con el VI Simposio Internacional CELIBAL (Centro Latinoamericano de Estudios Libaneses) “Líbano contemporáneo: desafíos y oportunidades”. Los lebolutioners presenciaron un panel compuesto por Michael Young (Carnegie Middle East Center), Joseph Bahout (Carnegie Middle East Center), Nizar Hassan (The Lebanese Politics Podcast), Habib Malek (LAU) y Sergio Jalil (CELIBAL) expresar su opinión sobre una serie de asuntos centrales para el estado actual del país antes de abrir el piso para una sesión de preguntas y respuestas. El simposio fue seguido por una charla de LAU que presentó las diversas oportunidades ofrecidas a los estudiantes internacionales, incluido el programa intensivo de árabe SINARC y el nuevo programa de inmersión cultural de verano.

Después del almuerzo ofrecido por la universidad, tuvo lugar el Congreso de Jovenes de la WLCU. La Directiva de WLCUY presentó el trabajo que se está realizando durante el período actual, incluida la formación de nuevos capítulos de Juventud en todo el mundo, campañas activas que han visto la participación de más de 150 miembros de la Juventud de WLCU, la apertura de cursos en línea junto a CELIBAL, y acuerdos de colaboración establecidos hasta la fecha actual. Los 191 participantes se dividieron en grupos, compartieron sus experiencias en las comunidades de sus países de residencia y discutieron el futuro del Líbano y cómo los jóvenes, como comunidad libanesa internacional, pueden tener un impacto positivo.

Día 7

El sábado estuvo dedicado a Trípoli y El Mina, ¡visitas tradicionales y especiales de Lebolution! El grupo fue recibido en el norte en la Cámara de Comercio de Trípoli y en el norte del Líbano, ¡disfrutando de un delicioso desayuno

tripolitano, dulce dulce y helado recién hecho! Después de un dabke temprano en la mañana, los Lebolutioners fueron al municipio de El Mina, donde fueron recibidos por el municipio, y llevaron a cabo el evento más esperado del programa: ¡el muro de Lebolution! Una pared blanca cerca del municipio de El Mina se puso a disposición de los Lebolutioners para dejar su huella, lo que resultó en una pintura colorida para simbolizar la unidad entre el Líbano y su gente, tanto residentes como emigrantes.

Luego, los participantes volvieron a Trípoli y recorrieron la ciudad y los antiguos zocos, terminando el recorrido a pie en la Ciudadela de Raymond de Saint-Gilles o el Castillo de Trípoli. El Sr. George Chabtini organizó un delicioso almuerzo en el restaurante Dar el Amar y los participantes disfrutaron el postre en el famoso Hallab.

Luego, el grupo se dirigió al monasterio de San Charbel en Annaya para una visita al atardecer antes de dirigirse a Aamchit para una maravillosa cena en el restaurante Pearl Island organizado por el equipo de DiasporaID.

Día 8

Una visita muy especial tuvo lugar por la mañana con el grupo Lebolution dirigiéndose a Aamchit al Regimiento de Comandos Marinos del Ejército Libanés. Después de una introducción a la estructura y actividades del Ejército y una reunión con los hijos de los mártires de la LAF, los Lebolutioners participaron en varias actividades físicas organizadas por el Ejército, ¡incluyendo una carrera de obstáculos, una tirolina, rapel y un paseo en bote! ¡La tarde se dedicó a relajarse, ya que el grupo se dirigió a Aquamarina 1 para almorzar y una tarde en la playa!

Día 9

El día 9 fue todo sobre la montaña, comenzando

el día con un recorrido a pie en la encantadora Dhour Shweir. Después de una recepción en el municipio, los participantes caminaron entre la naturaleza de la ciudad y visitaron una serie de puntos de referencia locales y terminaron su visita con un delicioso brunch junto al icónico Hotel Azur. El día continuó con una visita al Convento Histórico Mar Sannine, donde los Lebolutioners fueron recibidos por el equipo de exploración Baskinta y una actuación de la Orquesta Lebam.

Las monjas del convento proporcionaron dulces y bebidas caseras para una tarde especial. Luego, los participantes se dirigieron a Bakish para cenar con una vista asombrosa de la montaña. ¡Tarde en la noche los participantes fueron a Faqra para el festival Faqra para cerrar un día maravilloso!

Día 10

El último día completo fue para el Sur, visitando el histórico Castillo de Beaufort en Arnoun. Luego, los participantes fueron a Marjeyoun, donde fueron recibidos por el alcalde Sr. Amal Hourany y disfrutaron de algunos bocadillos en el edificio delmunicipio. Después de descansar un poco, el grupo fue a Hasbaya para un almuerzo memorable en el restaurante Hasbani antes de dirigirse más al sur para visitar el Líbano “tradicional”: ¡Rashaya al Foukhar!

En Rashaya al Foukhar, los participantes fueron recibidos con excelentes noticias: ¡se había plantado un cedro para honrar al ejército libanés en nombre de la Juventud de la WLCU! Después de un recorrido a pie por la ciudad que incluyó visitas a algunos de los famosos talleres de cerámica, los Lebolutioners disfrutaron de sabrosos manjares y manjares locales ofrecidos por el municipio.

Día 11

El último día comenzó en la región de Chouf visitando el hermoso Palacio Beiteddine, recibido con un gran grupo zaffeh, y Deir el Qamar. Después de un recorrido por el municipio y la ciudad, el grupo disfrutó de un almuerzo relajante cerca de la reserva de cedros de Barouk. En el camino de regreso al hotel, el grupo se detuvo para una visita pacífica obligada a Harissa para disfrutar de la vista del Líbano desde arriba.

El programa terminó esa noche con una ceremonia de clausura en el restaurante Kasser el Snaubar en Aafs. ¡La ceremonia de clausura fue un momento para agradecer a todos los patrocinadores, participantes y a todos los que hicieron realidad este programa! Pero antes de terminar Lebolution, tenía que tener lugar otra actividad tradicional: ¡el intercambio cultural! ¡Los participantes de cada uno de los países representados en el programa organizaron una serie de presentaciones y actividades para compartir las tradiciones y los dulces típicos de cada uno de sus países de residencia antes de disfrutar de una deliciosa comida y bailar para celebrar el éxito de otro gran viaje!
