To understand this dialectic, it is essential to know the origin and evolution of this constant migratory flow and its historical development and divergent characteristics in order to unravel the encounters and disagreements at the institutional level. The Lebanese diaspora and people have been able to overcome all the crises and conflicts that have occurred since the creation of the Lebanese State 100 years ago, but the current crisis places both in a particularly vulnerable situation and in conflict with those who hold political and economic power at government level. Will the diaspora continue to fulfill its historical role? Will the diaspora be able to influence political and economic decisions that can get Lebanon out of this severe crisis? What would Lebanon be like without the special relationship with its diaspora? What should be the role of the diaspora in repairing and reconfiguring Lebanon’s social, political and economic life?

Sergio Jalil is the Executive Director Center for Lebanese Studies for Latin America (CELIBAL) and a Middle East Affairs Specialist, professor in the Global Studies Master’s Program at the University of Salamanca (Spain), the Executive Program of the Contemporary Middle East (Universidad Católica Argentina) and frequently invited to speak at different universities in the US and Latin America and to participate in interviews in different media.
