As a newly established group, they have been working to strengthen their presence within their community through inspirational talks, giveaways and most recently, their Reconsolidation therapy Fundraiser. In collaboration with McGill University’s Dr. Alain Brunet, specialized in Trauma Therapy, and Dr. Sami Richa, the President of the Lebanese Society of Psychiatry in Lebanon, the WLCUY Canada is working to collect funds to train therapists in Lebanon on Reconsolidation therapy.
The August 4th blast in Beirut left countless Lebanese citizens to suffer from an unbelievable amount of physical and mental traumas, such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). As the cases of PTSD became more apparent, the demand for proper therapy in Lebanon skyrocketed. Dr. Alain Brunet and Dr. Sami Richa found that the PTSD treatment offered by therapists in Lebanon was outdated, lacking the newest and most effective ways to overcome PTSD. Following his sabbatical in Lebanon, Dr. Brunet became attached not only to the country, but to the kind nature of its citizens. In teaming up with Dr. Sami Richa, they have created a curriculum to train therapists in Lebanon to use Reconsolidation therapy, which has been proven to reduce the emotion associated with traumatic events, ultimately allowing the victim to overcome their trauma.

So, what is Reconsolidation therapy?
Reconsolidation therapy is a new form of therapy to treat patients suffering from PTSD, such as the victims of the Beirut Blast. In coupling the use of medication and therapy, the patient will be asked to think about the traumatic event in detail. The drug, called Propranolol, will then interfere with the re-saving of the memory, ultimately dampening the intense emotions associated with it, while allowing the patient to remember the event. Essentially, the patient will remember the event without it being as emotional as it once was. Reconsolidation therapy is also cost-effective as it only requires six 25-minute sessions in comparison to traditional PTSD therapy which can often take years.

What can you do to help?
The goal of this fundraiser is to collect funds which will be used to train the therapists in Lebanon.
