Statement issued by Roger Hani, President of the World Lebanese Cultural Union (WLCU), rejecting any link between the electoral rights of the diaspora and sectarian affiliation<\/strong><\/p>\n With full respect for the Speaker of the Parliament, Mr. Nabih Berri, I categorically reject any suggestion that granting Lebanese citizens abroad the right to vote according to their original constituencies constitutes isolation or targeting of a specific sect.<\/p>\n Such statements contradict the essence of the Lebanese Constitution, which guarantees equality among all citizens in rights and duties, and reinforces the unity of the Lebanese entity both for residents and for those abroad. A Lebanese, wherever they may be, remains an integral part of the homeland, and it is unacceptable to deprive them of their constitutional right to choose their representatives based on sect or geography.<\/p>\n Lebanese abroad are not against anyone, nor do they pose any threat; they are a fundamental pillar in supporting Lebanon, its economy, and its image worldwide. They have preserved Lebanon\u2019s name with pride even when the country itself was constrained.<\/p>\n Therefore, we consider any discrimination or attempt to restrict the diaspora\u2019s political participation as a violation of the principle of national equality and a breach of constitutional justice.
