Lebanon’s Nidal Asmar Shoots the Perfect Score to Equal the World Record – 17 February 2007

Lebanon’s Olympic trap shooter Nidal Asmar has written himself into the world record books by shooting a perfect 125/125 in the men’s trap at the 2007 Australia Cup held at the Melbourne Gun Club on February 10^th-11^th. Asmar now joins a list of just 6 shooters in history who have previously been able to accomplish such a flawless performance and becomes the only Lebanese sportsman to have ever held a world record. An Australian citizen and resident, Asmar also broke the previous Australian record of 124/125 set by Michael Diamond at the Atlanta Olympic Games.

Asmar’s perfect score came amid extremely windy conditions, adding to the credit of his achievement. Such a mammoth effort in difficult weather conditions resulted in an easy victory for Asmar, with second place-getter Olympic gold medallist Michael Diamond finishing an entire 8 targets behind with just 117/125. Additionally, Olympic gold medallist Russell Mark and Olympic bronze medallist Adam Vella were way behind the pace, both shooting just 69 out of the first 75 targets before deciding to withdraw from the event.

Asmar is now set to represent Lebanon at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and is among the favourites to win the gold medal.
